Traralgon and Latrobe Valley Childcare Centres: Recruiting in Victoria's Energy Transition Region

The Latrobe Valley — Traralgon, Morwell, Moe and the surrounding communities — is in the middle of one of the most significant economic transitions in regional Victoria's history. The shift away from coal-fired power generation and toward clean energy industries is reshaping the region's workforce, its population movements and its economic trajectory.

For childcare centre directors in the Latrobe Valley, this transition has both challenges and opportunities.

THE WORKFORCE TRANSITION OPPORTUNITY

Families associated with transition industries — clean energy construction, infrastructure, government services — are moving to the Latrobe Valley for work. More families means more childcare demand. Centres that can staff up to meet this demand have a genuine business growth opportunity.

But staffing up requires a proactive recruitment strategy. Waiting for Seek applications in the Latrobe Valley consistently underdelivers in a market where the qualified educator pool is limited and competition for local candidates is intensifying.

THE EDUCATOR MARKET IN TRARALGON

Traralgon is the Latrobe Valley's largest centre and has the region's most active educator market. Diploma educators and ECTs are in shortage, particularly for kindy rooms as the Best Start, Best Life expansion drives demand for qualified early childhood teachers.

For Traralgon centres, the proximity to Melbourne — approximately 160km — means national sourcing campaigns targeting Melbourne educators open to regional relocation consistently deliver viable candidates.

MORWELL AND MOE — SMALLER MARKETS, ACUTER SHORTAGES

Morwell and Moe have smaller local candidate pools than Traralgon and face correspondingly more acute shortages for specialist roles including ECTs and Diploma Room Leaders. These centres benefit most from national sourcing strategies and — where eligible — exploration of employer-sponsored visa pathways for international candidates.

THE LATROBE VALLEY LIFESTYLE PROPOSITION

Despite historical perceptions, the Latrobe Valley offers a genuinely compelling lifestyle proposition: affordable housing (among the lowest in Victoria), easy access to Gippsland's world-class natural landscapes (Wilsons Prom, 90 Mile Beach, High Country), and a tight community that rewards long-term commitment.

Vhire's candidate messaging for Latrobe Valley roles is tailored to convert candidates who know the outdoors lifestyle but may not have considered the Valley as a career destination.
